January traffic deaths up from 2018
(St. Paul, MN) – Traffic deaths in January 2019 in Minnesota were up from the same time period the previous year.
Preliminary numbers show that there were 26 fatalities resulting from 24 fatal crashes in January 2019. That’s compared to 2018, when 22 fatal crashes killed 22 people.
Of the 26 fatalities, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety reports that two deaths were related to distracted driving, six were speed-related, five were related to alcohol, and four people weren’t wearing seatbelts.
Broken down by gender, there were 14 men killed, and 12 were women.
Eight of the fatalities were pedestrians.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has several upcoming campaigns to target behaviors that contribute most to traffic deaths. Extra enforcement will in 2019 will include:
- Distracted Driving – April 8 – April 30
- Seat belt & Child Restraints – May 20 – June 2
- DWI – August 16 – September 2
- Seat belt & Child Restraints – September 16 – 28
- Holiday DWI – Multiple dates in November & December
