Woman Using Social Media To Find Owners Of Photos She Finds in Hurricane Debris
North Carolina woman Taylor Schenker was searching through debris when she came across photographs that had been blown away by Hurricane Helene.
“I found a wedding photo of a bride hugging somebody,” Schenker said. “You take photos because you have a moment you want to remember and so, they did all seem just special.”

So she set up an Instagram account called Photos from Helene, hoping to reunite them with the people who lost them. She has found 100 pictures personally, and now others have helped her build her collection. She estimates she’s found the owners for about 15% of the photos and hopes more will come. She hands delivers them with a hug to those who are still in the area, and mails some to those who are not. “Being able to have that moment where you hand something so special to somebody and then also just give them a hug – because they’ve lost likely their entire home in this situation – it’s such a privilege to have an insight into this moment in their lives through these photographs and be able to give them back to them.”
